 we use the past simple to talk about an action in the past that has finished
 we use the past continuous when an action takes place over a period of time in the past.
Compare:
I made dinner last night. I started at seven o´clock and finished at half past eight. P.S.
What were you doing at eight o´clock? I was making dinner P.C
Sam and I talked for an hour. P.S
While we were talking, Jane was trying to get our attention. P.C.
 we use P.S. and P.C. in the same sentence to describe an action that interrupted another
action which was taking place in the past. We can combine the PS and PC with when and while.

Darkness fall across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorise your neighbourhood
And whenever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside the corpse’s shell.
