Transcript Warm-Up

Write an English
sentence that
takes place in the
future. E.g., On
Wednesday, we
will go to the Art
Museum.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE FUTURE TENSE
•
In English, the auxiliary verb will is a sign of the future tense (shall in the first
person).
•
In Latin, instead of a separate word for will, the future is indicated by the letters
-bi- placed after the stem and before the personal ending (2 exceptions).
•
Formula: Present Stem + Tense Indicator + Person Indicator = Form
vocō, vocāre “to call”
Singular
1st Person
vocābō
“I shall call”
Plural
vocābimus
“we shall call”
2nd Person vocābis
“you (s.) will call”
vocābitis
“you (pl.) will call”
3rd Person
vocābunt
“they will call”
vocābit
“he/she/it will call”
FUTURE TENSE: 2ND CONJUGATION
The future of the second conjugation is formed like that of the first conjugation.
moneō, monēre “to warn”
Singular
1st Person
monēbō
“I shall warn”
Plural
monēbimus
“we shall warn”
2nd Person monēbis
“you (s.) will warn”
monēbitis
“you (pl.) will warn”
3rd Person
monēbunt
“they will warn”
monēbit
“he/she/it will warn”
