Shakespeare is thought to have made up over 1500 words! Here are
some common words and phrases Shakespeare coined that we still
use today:
Advertising
Bandit

Obscene

Critic
Film
Gossip
Hush

Nouns: eyeball, farmhouse, fortune-teller, glow,
hint, luggage, manager, moonbeam,

Verbs: gossip, hurry, mimic, numb, partner,
petition, puke, undress
Adjectives: full-grown, green-eyed, laughable,

How did he do this?
Combine existing words:
– Eyeball
– Brunch
– frenemy
Use an old word in a new way:
– Trippingly (trip along)
– Friend (turned from noun to verb—to friend
someone)
Adapt a word from another language:
– Embrace (French embracer)
– Alligator (Spanish el legato)
