Tell students that MIGHT and MUST are modal verbs, that is, verbs that
accompany main verbs to offer them an extra meaning.
Call sts´ attention to the features of main verbs:
1. Modal verbs have distinctive meanings, but these meanings need to be
completed by the meanings of main verbs.
2. Modal verbs do not stand on their own. They need to be directly or
indirectly associated to a verb.
3. The regular structure of modal verbs in a sentence is modal verb +
main verb without TO.
4. Modal verbs do not take the third person –S in the Simple Present
Tense.
5. Modal verbs do not require auxiliary verbs to form the interrogative or
negative forms. The interrogative form is expressed through subjectmodal verb inversion and the negative form, through the addition of NOT
after the modal verb.
