Direct Speech: “Unprotected sex is
dangerous for both partners”, said the doctor.
 Indirect Speech: The doctor said that
unprotected sex was dangerous for both
partners.
What are the main differences
between the 2 sets of sentences
 Direct Speech= presents quotqtion marks
and the narrator says the exact speech of
the speaker.
 Indirect Speech= uses reporting verbs
(said, warned, etc) the tense is one step
back in most of the cases. the pronoun I
becomes she or he.
The main differences between the
sentences
 DIRECT SPEECH:
 “I can’t say it was something I was planning to do
right now”, the 16 year old Nickelodeon star
confessed to OK! last December.
 INDIRECT SPEECH:
 The 16 year old Nickelodeon star confessed to
OK1 the previous December that she coildn’t say it
had been something she had been planning to do
then.
