Composite Materials : Rediscovery or Innovation?
Dr. P. RAGHOTHAMA RAO
former Scientist ‘G’/Regional Director
CEMILAC / DRDO
1
Look Around you …
We are amidst
Composite materials of one kind or other.
Not now only, it has been in existence …
Wooden Flush Door
RCC
Helmet
Volvo Bus
Big Cars
Motor Cycles
Tennis Racket
Aeroplane
Yesterday,Today and Tomorrow
A natural Composite
Roof above
Who has not seen/ worn
Please observe
Please observe (Bumper, Brake disc in the wheel..)
Brake disc
It is made of Composite
Definite need to have Lighter and Stronger Material
Composite materials are thus seen all around us
2
What is then a Composite, precisely ?
It is a combination of more than one material
It is mixture two or more materials
It is a heterogeneous material
There is no chemical reaction among the materials
Combined together it gives Better properties than as individual material.
Example; RCC, Helmet , Boats, etc., etc.,
Two materials together? Yes.
Major/ More quantity material is called MATRIX (plastic, concrete , etc, etc)
Minor/ Less quantity material is called REINFORCEMENT ( glass, steel rods, etc,
etc)
3
A variety of Composites are there
Because of…………… a variety of Matrix materials
and
…………… a variety of Reinforcement materials
Based on Matrix Materials ……..
Plastic
Polymer Matrix Composites (PMC)
Metal
Metal Matrix Composites (MMC)
Ceramics Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC)
Based on Reinforcement
Fibre Reinforced Composites
Powder Reinforced Composites
Core / Laminated Composites………
4
Disadvantages(Opportunity with Challenges….)
Properties are ANISOTROPIC ( Not same property in all directions)
Generally expensive
Repair is difficult
Recycling is difficult
Degeneration is very slow.
5
Advantages
Engineer/ Tailor the properties(in whatever direction desired )
Light weight
High Strength
Durability
6
Conclusions
Man will always be looking for stronger materials
Man will always be looking for lighter materials
Composites materials promise to provide
The search goes on ….

Science Club
A. Meet frequently/ regularly
B. Attempt / arrange presentation on science/ technology as observed around us for example
Chemistry in Cosmetics, Chemistry in Kitchen, Mineral wealth in India
C. Have conversation with Scientists and Technologists ( Meet a Scientist…..)
D. Display an Interesting finding/ discovery/news item in one line statement
E. Interact with science promoters like KRVP for participation in Science activities
F. Display information on opportunities to pursue science – NTSE, Olympiad competitions,
KVPY(IISc )
G. Arrange special events like Star gazing/ Sky watching
H. Arrange Quiz programs / Debates
I. Visit to Science Museums/ demonstrations/ Exhibitions
J. Collect simple Books/ Experiment kits on science
