Adverbs – used to modify a verb, adjective or
other adverb
Answers the questions : where, when, how, or to what
extent (how much or how long)
Where –
The fire started here.
The thief fell down as he ran away.
When –
She takes notes daily in class.
He arrived promptly for school.
How The accident occurred suddenly.
She spoke carefully to the child.
To what extent –
We should never become upset.
The escaped convicts ran far.
Keith worked rapidly.
verb=worked –
worked how? RAPIDLY
We live here now.
verb=live -
live where? HERE
live when?NOW
The story was very funny.
adjective=funny
how funny? VERY
They had left rather quickly.
verb=left -
how did they leave? QUICKLY
adverb=quickly -
how quickly did they leave? RATHER
“How” Adverbs

Some adverbs tell how.
They usually modify verbs (action words).
They often end in –ly.
Examples:
– Kelly talks quickly. (Quickly tells how Kelly
talks)
– Kelly runs fast. (Fast tells how Kelly runs)
“Where” Adverbs
• Some adverbs tell WHERE
• An adverb that tells where usually modifies
a verb

“When” Adverbs

Some adverbs tell when.
They usually modify verbs (action words).
It will only be one word (not a phrase)
Examples:
– Yesterday he went home.
• Yesterday tells when he went home.
– I shall buy a gift for you later.
• Later tells when I shall buy a gift.

“To What Extent” Adverbs
• Some adverbs tell to what extent.
• They usually modify verbs (action words).
• There are seven common adverbs that tell
to what extent:
– Not, so, very, too, quite, rather, somewhat
– MEMORIZE THESE WORDS
• Sometimes these adverbs are within a
prepositional phrase.
“To What Extent” Adverbs
• Examples:
– I would rather stay here.
• Rather tells to what extent I would stay.
– This is a very pretty picture.
• Very tells to what extent this is pretty
– Don’t walk so slowly.
• So tells to what extent you walk
• Slowly is also an adverb (tells how you walk)
