How to do a grammar test: Example
Adjectives and Adverbs
• Adjectives describe nouns. They usually
precede the noun.
– I live in a quiet neighborhood.
– We ate a delicious meal at that restaurant.
• Adjectives follow the verb “to be” and certain
other verbs called linking verbs, such as: look,
seem, taste, feel, appear, sound.
– Mr. Hudak-Kuni is very creative.
– You look tired today.
Adjectives and Adverbs
• Adjectives in English don’t have a plural form.
– Correct: Those are beautiful flowers.
– Incorrect: Those are beautifuls flowers.
• Adverbs give information about verbs. They
often answer the question “How?”. These
adverbs are called adverbs of manner. They
are usually formed by adding –ly to the end of
an adjective. Adverbs usually follow the verb
or the object.

• For example:
– Please talk quietly.
– She plays the piano beautifully.
• Adverbs also describe adjectives and other
adverbs. They usually precede the adjective
or adverb they describe.
– That test was surprisingly easy.
– You answered the question extremely well.
