What is a direct object?
A word or group of words that receives the
direct action of the verb.
So in the sentence: John likes Mary
John is the
subject

What is an indirect object?
Tells for whom or to whom something is done
So in the sentence: He gave me an apple.

What is a pronoun?
• A pronoun is a replacement word. It takes the
place of a noun.
• I see Jane  I see her
• We eat cake  We eat it
• I wrote to Julie  I wrote to her

When using more than one
pronoun in a sentence they will
ALWAYS go in this order
What’s the difference?
• Indirect means ‘when there IS someone or
something in the way’, usually indicated by
the word or sense of TO (in French À)
• So - “he talks to me” is “il me parle”

• Direct literally
means ‘when there’s
no-one or nothing in
the way’
• So - he sees me is

• With words for him, her, them…

pronoun will look the same

negative and the ne…pas or other
negative term wraps round je ne l’aime pas

• In negative commands, the pronouns all
look the same:
