• The “A” in the personal A has NO
translation into English.
1.It is ALWAYS required when the action of
the verb goes toward a person or
something that refers to a person. (direct
object )
ejemplos
• I see Marcos.
• Yo veo a Marcos.
• They visit their friend.
• Ellos visitan a su amigo.
• We call our uncles.
• Nosotros llamamos a nuestros tíos.
• You take Paco to the store.
• Tú llevas a Paco a la tienda.
2.Sometimes, when the direct object is an
animal with a name, the personal “A” is
used.

I am looking for Puff, my cat.
Busco a Puff, mi gato.
We call Spot.
Llamamos a Spot.
3. The personal “A” may be used when a
geographical name is the direct object.
(This usage is changing and now you see
it with and without the personal “A”)
We know ( are acquainted with) Spain.
Conocemos a España.
Conocemos España.
No uses la “A” personal:
• You don’t use the personal “A” when there
is a preposition after the verb:
– con
– de
• Don’t use the personal “A” when it is the
subject of the sentence.
• After the verbs Tener and Ser
Ejemplos:
• Hablo con mi amigo
– I am talking with my friend.
• Paco viaja mucho
– Not: A Paco viaja mucho
• But: A Paco le gusta… (The “A” is NOT a
personal “A”)
I have three brothers.
Tengo tres hermanos.
You are my friend.
Eres mi amigo/a.
