Objectives
Students will:
Identify verb phrases with the helping verb
“have.”
Use the correct form of the helping verbs
“could, should, would, and must.”
Rules
A main verb can have more than one
helping verb.
The helping verb “have” is often used with
the helping verbs “could, would, should,
and must.”
– Could have, would have, should have, and must
have.
The two helping verbs and the main verb
form a verb phrases.
These helping verbs are often
spoken as contractions.

Rules
Do not use “of” with could, would, should,
or must.
Incorrect:
– You should of seen the parade last weekend.
Correct:
– You should have seen the parade last weekend.
