Summary:
There are nine parts of speech in the English language. Every word
in a sentence has a job and can be identified as one of the nine parts
of speech. Nouns identify people, places, things, and ideas, while
pronouns replace nouns. Verbs are the action parts of the sentence
and tell what the subject is doing. Adverbs describe nouns. Adverbs
describe verbs and usually end in –ly. Conjunctions join words
and clauses together. Articles are a type of adjective that come before
10
nouns; there are only three articles: a, an, the. Prepositions show time
location and movement. Interjections are words that show emotion.
Purpose of presentation:
This presentation provides a very basic
introduction to the concept of parts of
speech in language. Actually, the study
of parts of speech can be quite
complicated and involved, but the
purpose of this presentation is to give the
students a working vocabulary and a way
to improve their grasp of grammar.
