Le conjugaison des verbes réguliers en –er
(Conjugating regular –er verbs)
We’ve already learned the complete conjugation of one verb,
ÊTRE (to be).
ÊTRE (to be)
je suis (I am)
nous sommes (we are)
tu es (you are)
vous êtes (you (plural) are)
il/elle est (he/she is)
ils/elles sont (they are)
Now we’ll learn how to conjugate regular verbs that end
in -er.
To conjugate a verb, you take the stem of the INFINITIVE
and add the appropriate endings. The infinitive is the most
basic form of a verb. Most infinitives in French end in –er.
Here are some examples of French infinitives:
quitter (to leave)
arriver (to arrive)
habiter (to live)
When conjugating a verb, you remove the final –er from the
infinitive, which leaves you with the VERB STEM.
Infinitive
quitter
arriver
habiter
Stem
quittarrivhabit-
You finish the conjugation by adding the following endings.
The ending you choose depends on the subject of the verb.
Subject
je
tu
il/elle
nous
vous
ils/elles
Verb ending
-e
-es
-e
-ons
-ez
-ent
Here are the complete present tense conjugations of two –er verbs:
PARLER (to speak)
je parle (I speak)
nous parlons (we speak)
tu parles (you speak)
vous parlez (you (plural) speak)
il/elle parle (he/she speaks)
ils/elles parlent (they speak)
AIMER (to like, love)
j’aime (I like)
nous aimons (we like)
tu aimes (you like)
vous aimez (you (plural) like)
il/elle aime (he/she likes)
ils/elles aiment (they like)
The endings are silent except for –ons and –ez.
je quitte
tu quittes
il/elle quitte
nous quittons
vous quittez
ils/elles quittent
If a verb begins with a vowel or a vowel sound, there is a
contraction between je and the verb:
J’aime le français. (I like French.)
J’habite à Issaquah. (I live in Issaquah.)
You use ne…pas to make a negative. Ne contracts when it
comes before a vowel or vowel sound.
Tu aimes les maths? -Non, je n’aime pas les maths.
Vous habitez à Paris? - Non, nous n’habitons pas à Paris.
Nous habitons à Montréal.
