Terms to Know:
Predicate-The verb and everything
relating to it.
(He ran up the mountain)
Complement-A word or group of words
that completes the predicate of a
sentence.
Nominative-A noun or pronoun that is the
subject of a sentence or renames the
subject of a sentence.
Terms to Know:
Intransitive -
No action is being transferred to an
object.
*Linking Verbs are ALWAYS
Intransitive.
Why?
Types of Verbs:
Helping Verb (HV)-Next to and helps an
action verb or linking verb.
(He will become a teacher.)
Action Verb (AV)-Tells what the subject
does
(He jumps over the book.)
Linking Verb (LV)-Links the subject of a
sentence to a word in the predicate
1. His name is MC Hammer.
2. He sings a song.
3. I will play the song for you.
4. This has a beat.
5. You can’t touch this.
6. Sound the bell.
7. We should learn the dance.
8. MC Hammer feels popular .
9. The class should bust some moves.
10. You can’t touch this.
Complements
A Linking Verb has 2 friends.
One of them will be in the clause with a
linking verb. Not both.
1. Predicate Nominative (PN) - Follows a
linking verb or intransitive verb and renames
the subject.
(He is a cop.)
2. Predicate Adjective (PA) -Follows a linking
verb or intransitive verb and describes the
subject.
(He is silly.)
Tricks to find the PN or PA:
*This will also help you determine if a
verb is a linking verb or not.

Find the Subject
Find the verb (should be linking)
Replace the verb with an =
Subject = Noun or Adjective
*Remember! The noun “trumps”
the adjective.
