GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Greek mythology was told orally,
poetically, by songs and by art.
The Greeks created the mythology to
explain how the world was created,
how the seasons were created and
how to explain natural phenomenon
like tornadoes etc...
LOCATION
Greece is located east of Italy, south of Bulgaria, and west of
Turkey.
Olympians
Zeus- Ruler god, sign is the thunderbolt
Poseidon- Sea god, uses the trident
Hades- ruler of the underworld, god of wealth and greed
Hestia- goddess of the hearth, she's very humble and lesser known god
Hera- Married to Zeus, protector of marriage signs are the cow and the
peacock
Ares- God of war, symbols are the vulture and the dog
Athena- Goddess of wisdom, invented the olive tree, fierce and brave
Apollo- God of music, cant lie, signs are the crow and the dolphin
Aphrodite- Goddess of love and beauty, signs are the myrtle, dove
swan and the sparrow
Hermes- Zeus’s messenger, fastest god, is also the guide fo the dead
Artemis-Apollo’s twin, lady of wild things, signs are the moon, all
animals especially the deer
Hephaestus- ugly and lame, god of fire and forge, husband of
Aphrodite

Creation Myths





Uranus and Gaia had many children but some of the children became
afraid of the power of THEIR children.
Cronus and Rhea gave birth to many children but Cronus being
scared ate them all.
Rhea saved one, Zeus, and he grew up to defeat Cronus and free his
brothers and sisters.
Zeus than became the ruler of Olympus.
He locked most of the Titans in the underworld, with an exception of
a few like Atlas.
Titans
The Titans were:
Cronus and Rhea
Oceanus and Teyhys
Hyperion and Theia
Coeus and Pheobe
Mnemosyhe, Themis,
Crius, Iapetus
The Titans were known as the elder gods and they ruled during the
golden age.
Heroes
Jason brought back the golden fleece back
to Greece.
Hercules was the strongest hero and
accomplished many tasks.
Bellerophon defeated the chimera.
Odysseus killed a cyclops, defeated many bad
guys, and killed the minotaur.
Perseus killed Medusa.
The Greek heroes are not like Superman or Batman of today. The
heroes of ancient Greece were selfish and did every thing they
did for their own good.
