Module 5- Unit 2
OPERATING COMPUTER SYSTEMS
Week 8 Oct 26, 2016– J. Smith
CAP
Objectives
At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
1. Discuss at least two capabilities and parameters of
operating systems after class
lecturette.
2. Outline at least two methods to assess and evaluate
interoperability and compatibility
with system components and vendor products after
lecturette.
What is an Operating System (OS)?
 OS is a software program that enables the computer
hardware to communicate and operate with the computer
software. Without a computer operating system, a computer
and software programs would be useless.
What is an Operating System (OS)?
Cont’d
 When computers were first introduced, the user interacted
with them using a command line interface, which required
commands. Today, almost every computer is using a
Graphical User Interface (GUI) operating system that is
much easier to use and operate.
Capabilities
 Ease of use
 Available software
 Backwards compatibility
 Support for new hardware
 Plug & Play
 Games
 Compatibility with MS driven websites
Parameters
 High resource requirements
 Closed Source
 Poor security
 Virus susceptibility
 Outrageous license agreements
 Poor technical support
 Hostile treatment of legitimate users
 Extortionist prices
 Additional expenses
 Poor stability
Types of OS
Windows
Mac
Linux
Android
Windows
 Microsoft Windows 7 - PC and IBM compatible operating
system. Microsoft Windows is the most common and used
operating system.
Mac
 Apple MacOS - Apple Mac operating system. The only Apple
computer operating system is MacOS.
Linux
 The Linux open source operating system, or Linux OS,
is a freely distributable, cross-platform operating
system based on Unix that can be installed on PCs, laptops,
netbooks, mobile and tablet devices, video game consoles,
servers, supercomputers and more.

Interoperability and compatibility
with system components
 Operation System Requirements:
 Example for Windows 7:
 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)
processor*
 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
 DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Interoperability and compatibility
with system components
 Computer Manufactures (Motherboards)
 See example below:

page.aspx?pid=4905#sp
Client requirements
What does your client need?
 Is it Space?
 Size?
 Speed?
 Normal?

Activity 60 mins Groups of three
Search for Specification in groups of 3 using Internet
connection. Select a Motherboard from the list below and
 document its CPU, chipset, memory, back panel
connectors and software Bundle.
 Discuss individually why you would or would
not use the motherboard selected.
