Campbell’s
Hero’s Journey
• Joseph Campbell called his hero’s journey “monomyth,”
meaning one myth. He believed all stories incorporated
aspects of the hero’s journey, whether it is a physical
journey or a spiritual/mental one. We can see this pattern
clearly in popular movies and literature. For example:
The Odyssey, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Finding Nemo,
Beowulf, The Fairie Queen, Moby Dick
• Not every story has EVERY component of the hero’s
journey
• The hero is introduced sympathetically so the audience
can identify with the situation or dilemma. Some kind of
polarity in the hero’s life is pulling in different directions
and causing stress
The Ordinary World
• Something shakes up the situation, either from external or
internal pressure, so the hero must face the beginnings of
change.
The Call to Adventure
• The hero feels the fear of the unknown and tries to turn
away from the adventure, however briefly. Alternately,
another character may express the uncertainty and danger
ahead.
Refusal of the call
• The hero leaves the known world and ventures into the
unknown.
Crossing the
Threshold/Entering the
Unknown
• The hero comes across a seasoned traveler of the worlds
who gives him or her training, equipment, or advice that
will help on the journey. Or the hero reaches within to a
source of courage and wisdom. Supernatural does not
necessarily mean magic – just above the laws of nature.
Supernatural Aid
• A special (and often magical) item that assists the hero
on his/her quest
Talisman
• A sidekick is introduced to help the hero on his/her
journey
Allies/Helpers
• The hero experiences a set of obstacles to make him/her
stronger. During the supreme ordeal, all of the hero’s
training is utilized. Once this ordeal is over, all of the
tension is relieved.
Tests and the Supreme
Ordeal
• The hero takes possession of the treasure won by facing
the supreme ordeal.
Reward
• The supreme ordeal is over so now the hero has to return
home. However, their journey home may contain a few
obstacles.
The Journey Home
• The hero’s quest was life-changing and now they
have proved themselves worthy.
