Review 1
How does our solar system, fit into this system?
Our solar system is a subsystem of the galaxy. Our star is just
one star in the galaxy
“I can…” Review 2
• In our light investigations, we saw that the
shadows got longer in the winter and now they
are getting shorter? Explain why.
The sun is higher in the summer and lower in the winter
“I can…” Review 3
• At what position is the Northern Hemisphere in
Winter, Fall and Spring? Explain.
Winter is position A
Spring is position D
Fall is position B
I can tell because the Northern
hemisphere is pointed way from
the sun in the winter.
D
A
C
B
“I can…” Review 4
• Name the phase of the Moon below. Is it
waxing or waning? How do you know?
The phase of the moon below is
first quarter. I know it is first
quarter and the lit side make a
lower case “b”. This means it is
being born – waxing – and the
shape tells mea it is first quarter.
“I can…” Review 5
• Is it true that the reason the moon goes
through phases is because the angle the Sun
hits it changes? Explain…
No, it is not true . The moon goes through phases because as it
orbits, we see more or less of the side that is always lit
“I can…” Review 6
• Can an eclipse happen during a crescent
moon? Why or why not.
• Why don’t we have an eclipse every month?
No it can’t because the moon is not directly between the earth and the sun
when it is in crescent moon. It has to be a new moon to do that. We don’t
have an eclipse every month because the moons orbit is tilted 5 degrees
which cause the moon to be too high or too low to have an eclipse
“I can…” Review 7
• What type of eclipse is this? What phase of the
moon is it? What part of the shadow are you
standing in?
This is a partial solar eclipse. It is a new moon and I am
standing in the penembra
“I can…” Review 8
• If a solar eclipse happens today, when will the
next lunar eclipse be? When will the next solar
eclipse be? Explain.
A lunar eclipse will happen in two
weeks, when the moon is half way
through its cycle and in full moon.
The next solar eclipse will be in
about 6 months, when everything
is lined up perfectly again
“I can …” Review 9
How does the sun produce its light and heat?
What elements are involved?
The energy comes from nuclear
fusion where hydrogen atoms
smash together to make helium
atoms
“I can …” Review 10
What are the blemishes on the surface of the Sun?
How are they formed?
Is there a pattern to when they appear?
What affects can they have on the Earth?
Those are sunspots
The form when twisted magnetic fields block convection
The occur in patterns that occur in 10-12 year cycles
They can cause solar flares, which brighten the sun and make the earth warmer
The solar flares can send CME which can effect our electricity
The particles in a CME can also cause the northern lights.
“I can …” Review 11
What are the protections the Earth has from
the dangers from the sun.
The earth has three protections
Magnetic field: protects us from CMEs
The tilt: prevents the sun from concentrating on one place all year
The atmosphere: absorbs and reflect harmful rays
