Martisor or...The Little March
– the symbol of spring

It is a small ornament tied to a
white and red woven string.
Women and girls receive such
small pieces of jewelry and
wear them during March, as a
sign of spring arrival.
It is believed that
if someone makes a
wish while hanging
a Martisor in a tree ,
the wish comes true.
In early April, in
many Romanian
villages, trees are
decorated by such
trinkets.
Dragobete
Drag = dear, beloved

On this day, considered locally
the first day of spring, boys and
girls gather vernal flowers.
Those who take part in
Dragobete customs are
supposed to be protected from
illness, especially fevers, for
the rest of the year. In
Romania, Dragobete is known
as a day for lovers, rather like
Valentine's Day.
Saint Andrew ‘s Day
A superstitious belief says that
the night before St. Andrew's
Day is specially suitable for
magic that reveals a young
woman's future husband or that
binds a future husband to her.
In Romania, it is customary for
young women to put 41 grains
of wheat beneath their pillow
before they go to sleep, and if
they dream that someone is
coming to steal their grains that
means that they are going to get
married next year.
Christmas Carols

The singing of carols is a very important
part of Romanian Christmas festivities.
Throughout the Christmas season, little
Romanian children (especially those in the
villages) visit every house in the locality
singing carols such as Steaua ('The Star'),
Trei Pastori ('The Three Shepherds') and
Mos Craciun ('Santa Claus') and reciting
poems and legends tied to the festival.
