The important thing
about the Middle Ages
is that many invasions
resulted in the loss of
Greco-Roman culture.
• Germanic invaders over ran the western
half of the Roman Empire.
• Cities were abandoned as centers of
government.
• City dwellers fled to the country and
grew their own food
• Reading and writing was lost and only
church officials could read

The important thing
about the Middle Ages
is that many invasions
resulted in the loss of
Greco-Roman culture.
• Charlemagne extended the Frankish
rule and built an Empire larger than
any known since Rome.
• Charlemagne was given the title Roman
Emperor by the Pope.
• One of his greatest accomplishments
was the encouragement of learning
• He opened a school to train monks and
priest in reading and writing.

• Feudalism spread across Western
Europe
• The feudal system was based on rights
and obligations
• In exchange for military protection and
other services, a lord granted land called
a fief.
• The feudal system, status determined a
person’s prestige and power.

• The Code of Chivalry demanded that a knight
fight bravely in defense of the earthly feudal
lord, his heavenly lord and his chosen lady.
• Chivalrous knights protected the weak and
the poor.
• The ideal knight was loyal, brave and
courteous.
• Training for knighthood began at age 7 and
continued until they learned the code of
chivalry and was able to master his fighting
skills at ate 21.

power involved in politics.
• Otto created the Roman Empire of the
German Nation and it was later called
the Holy Roman Empire.

• The Crusades, holy war, was launched to
return Palestine, the holy land, to the
Christians.
• Richard the Lion-Hearted fought against

and hatred.

• Feudalism declined as agriculture, trade,
finance, towns and universities developed.
• Guilds started to provide training, regulate
quality, price of goods, and to serve the
community.
• Increase trade gave the merchant’s more
wealth and power.
• The changes in the Middle Ages laid the
foundations for modern Europe.

• William the Conqueror claimed England in
the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
• Eleanor of Aquitaine brought the large
territory of Aquitaine, France to King Henry
II.
• King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 at
Runnymede.
• The Great Schism began the split in the
Church over which of the three Popes was the
true Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

• The Bubonic Plague, Black Death killed

• The Plague caused trade to decline and

• The Hundred Years’ War was the war for
control of land on French soil between France
and England.
• The longbow was powerful enough to
penetrate armor and could fire 12 to 15 arrows
per minute.
• Joan of Arc helped the French win the
Hundred Years’ War.
• Nationalism emerged in England and France
after the war.
• The end of the Hundred Years’ War ended the
Middle Ages.
