system of defense.
Many invading groups set up kingdoms
throughout western Europe.
Kingdoms were often at war with each

in exchange for land
Peasants: serfs; farmed the lord/knight’s land in
exchange for a small plot of land to live on

people on the manor needed: food, tools,
