BACK PANEL CONNECTORS
AND PORTS
• Back Panels=The back panel is the portion of the motherboard that allows you to
connect external devices such as your monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse. As
can be seen in the picture below, the back panel is on the edge of the
motherboard. The back panel connectors are all the connectors mounted on the back
panel.
Ports=In computer hardware, a port serves as an interface between
the computer and othercomputers or peripheral devices. Incomputer terms,
a port generally refers to the female part of connection. Computer portshave many
uses, to connect a monitor, webcam, speakers, or other peripheral devices.
PCI EXPRESS X1 SLOTS
• PCIe 1.x uses an 8b/10b encoding scheme, resulting in a 20% (= 2/10) overhead on
the raw channel bandwidth.[32]
PCI EXPRESS X16 SLOT
• The PCI Express x16 graphicsinterface (also called PCIe x16) offers
increased bandwidth and scalability over the previous AGP8X generation. PCI
Express x16 allows up to 4 GB/s of peak bandwidth per direction, and up to 8 GB/s
concurrent bandwidth. PCI-Express x16 is used by the Intel 915 and 925 and
other chipsets which support PCI-Express.
NORTH BRIDGE
• The Northbridge is the controller that interconnects the CPU to memory via the
frontside bus (FSB). It also connects peripherals via high-speed channels such as
AGP and PCI Express. Northbridge is an Intel chipset that communicates with the
computer processor and controls interaction with memory, the Peripheral
Component Interconnect (PCI) bus, Level 2 cache, and all Accelerated Graphics
Port (AGP) activities. Northbridge communicates with the processor using the
frontside bus (FSB).
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)
SOCKET
A central processing unit (CPU) is the electronic circuitry within a computer that
carries out the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetic,
logical, control and input/output (I/O) operations specified by the instructions.
POWER CONNECTOR
• Power connectors are devices that allows an electrical current to pass through it
for the exclusive purpose of providing power to a device (not a data stream, for
example, or anything more complex).
FRONT PANEL CONNECTORS
• The front panel header is where the connectors of hard disk drive activity lights,
case speaker, reset button, power on/off button, computer power on light, and key
lock, are connected to make them function smoothly. In the past days, users always
have difficulty connecting the front panel due to a lack of standard location on the
motherboard.
CMOS
• A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) is an integrated circuit design
on a printed circuit board (PCB) that uses semiconductor technology. The CMOS is
a physical part of the motherboard: it is a memory chip that houses setting
configurations and is powered by the onboard battery. The CMOS is reset and loses
all custom settings in case the battery runs out of energy, Additionally, the system
clock resets when the CMOSloses power.
SOUTH BRIDGE
• Relatively slower connections
• USB, Ethernet, SATA
• BIOS
• The southbridge is one of the two chips in the core logic
chipset on a personal computer (PC) motherboard, the
other being the northbridge. The southbridge typically
implements the slower capabilities of the motherboard in
a northbridge/southbridgechipset computer architecture.
SATA CONNECTORS
• SATA. Stands for "Serial Advanced Technology Attachment,"
or "Serial ATA." It is an interface used to connect ATA hard drives
to a computer's motherboard. Serial ATA (SATA, abbreviated
from Serial AT Attachment) is a computer bus interface that
connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as
hard disk drives, optical drives, and solid-state drives.
RANDOM ACESS MEMORY (RAM)
SLOTS
• Stands for "Random Access Memory," and is pronounced like
the male sheep. RAM is made up of small memory chips that
form amemory module. These modules are installed in the RAM
slots on the motherboard of your computer.
