大綱:
US power grid started more than 120 years ago. Today, its electricity generating capacity
has exceeded 1 trillion watts. The eastern interconnect itself covers more than 5,000,000
square kilo-meter and running at 3600 rpm with power level approaching 1 gigahorsepower. This presentation will start with the status of the US grid and its need for
power electronics technologies that makes grid smarter. The smart grid domain and
technology areas will be defined to justify the need for power electronics technologies
including power semiconductor devices and advanced power conditioning circuit.

Time for electric vehicle is finally arrived. In the past 100 years, the electric vehicles kept
finding ways to beat the gas engine vehicle but were never succeeded. Today, all the
essential technology elements are getting ready, and the EV markets are poised to take off.
Although conceptually the most critical element of EV is the battery, the actual enabling
technology is power electronics and motor drives. This lecture will start with the EV history
and its recent development to project the future. The second part of the talk is to describe
the entire drivetrain of the EV and hybrid EV. How can electric drivetrain work with
mechanical engine? What are the key electronic technologies? How can renewable energy
play a role? Several commercial EV and HEV examples will be used to explain the
technology content. The last part of the talk is to highlight power electronics technology
areas and their opportunities. In conclusion, there has not been a better time for power
electronics engineers.

主講人簡介:
Dr. Lai is an IEEE Fellow. He chaired the IEEE Workshop on Computers in Power
Electronics (COMPEL 2000). He was founding chair for 2001 IEEE/DOE Future Energy
Challenge. He was General Chair for IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and
Exposition (APEC-2005) and 2008 NSF Workshop on Power Electronics for Alternate
Energy and Distributed Generation Systems. His work brought him several distinctive
awards including Technical Achievement Award at Lockheed Martin Award Night in 1995,
three IEEE IAS Conference Paper Awards in 1995, 1996 and 2007, one IEEE IECON Best
Paper Award in 1997, First Prize Paper Award from IPEC-Niigata in 2005, Best Paper
Award from PCC-Nagoya in 2007, and First Place Student Team Award from TI Analog
Design Competition in 2009.
