What did we do?
What is the issue?: Identifying and
reducing malaria impacts of dams
in Africa
• Determined current malaria
impact of dams in Africa
• Determined future malaria impact
of dams in Africa
• Explored potential for reservoir
management to contribute to
malaria control
Dams: malaria impacts
• >1.1 million cases/year due to large dams
>900 000 in unstable areas
>200 000 in stable areas
• 2.4-3 million cases/year due to
large dams by the 2080s
• 0.8-1.7 million case in crease in unstable areas
• 4-500 000 case increase in stable areas
These figures result from only about 60 % of
large dams – the ones that are georeferenced
Reservoir management: additional tool to control malaria?
• Preliminary relationship between drawdown rate, larval
abundance, adult Anopheles mosquitoes and malaria
transition around Koka
– Faster drawdown has positive results (0.5 m/month)
• Explored impacts of
targeted implementation
of this on other dam
objectives
– Minimal impacts on
hydro production that
can be offset if part of a
broader system
