A STEM Proposal
Purpose
The U.S. Department of Labor expects health care
will generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs
between 2006 and 2016, more than any other
industry.
The Health & Medical Sciences Academy at
Lakeland will:
Promote awareness of the wide variety of
occupations in health and the medical sciences
Create students that are workforce ready in the
field of health and medical sciences
Mission
The High School Health and Medical Sciences
Academy provides a rigorous academic
environment in which students prepare for
21st century careers and professions in the
Health and Medical Sciences.
Objectives
Provide an academically challenging environment in
which students learn to think critically, communicate
effectively, value diversity, and engage in the pursuit
of lifelong learning and academic achievement.
Provide a curriculum centered in the advanced math
and science topics required for higher education in
the fields of health care and medicine.
Objectives
Provide corresponding CTE programs that enable
students to attain the academic and vocational
knowledge and skills for immediate employment in
health care upon high school graduation.
Provide opportunities for students to learn the
fundamentals of scientific research through
meaningful participation in investigative studies
and independent projects.
Objectives
Develop partnerships with private and public
health care professionals and facilities for the
placement of students as interns in clinical and
research programs and provide opportunities for
job shadowing, volunteer service, and mentoring.
