Urban Design Developer of the Year
Call for entries
The National Urban Design Awards are the UK’s premier awards for public authorities,
consultants, contractors, developers and homebuilders involved in the design of towns and
cities, streets and spaces, estates and neighbourhoods.
The Urban Design Developer of the Year award gives recognition to leading developers and
homebuilders who are at the forefront of the industry in the quality of urban design in their work.
We are now inviting entries for the 2016 awards and encourage you to take this opportunity to
showcase your company’s skills and schemes.
TO ENTER please send in:
1. A short summary of your company’s approach to design (Single A4 page, 200-250 words).
You might wish to cover any company policies, values, mission statement, in-house guidance, procedures.
2. Details of your best built scheme (UK or international) from the past three years.
The schemes can be any reasonable area of urban design and development, large or small including
greenfield housing; mixed-use sites; inner urban estate regeneration and redevelopment; industrial and
mixed use; retail and leisure development. Please provide a short narrative to address each of the
judging criteria.
The judging criteria are:
Design quality: How have the highest design and environmental principles been implemented in the
scheme? How have the design quality and environmental standards positively influenced the design of
public spaces, building and land use arrangement, and detailed quality of the public realm in relation to the
context? Are the buildings, spaces, and materials adaptable and durable?
Land assembly & financing: Were there any creative ways of bringing about the land for development
such as infrastructure-first, public-private partnerships, community land trusts, and/or phasing strategies?
Were there any financial challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? Was there a measurable
regeneration impact?
Social benefits: How has your scheme met local social needs? For residential developers: have the
buildings and/or spaces provided affordable housing, training and employment, cultural, and health and
well-being benefits to the residents and users? How has your scheme raised the quality of life of users?
Please provide the following documentation for the scheme in a Powerpoint presentation and PDF:
• Design objectives; Site analysis drawings; Basic Background data (e.g. area of site, number of
units etc); Masterplan; A selection of images including street views
ELIGIBILITY:
The award is open to any UK based developer or homebuilder, but limited to one entry per company.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 21 August 2015 @ 4pm
All entries should be sent by email to [email protected] to arrive no later than 4pm on
Friday 21 August 2015. Large files may be sent by DropBox or a similar file sharing facility.
In entering the awards, the entrants agree that aspects of the shortlisted schemes can be used in
UDG publications, including the journal Urban Design, news releases and on the web.

SHORTLISITING: Finalists
Shortlisted entries go forward to the next stage: a national vote by practitioners involved in urban
design, and will be invited to present their entries as 2-minute pre-recorded videos or Powerpoint
presentations at the Awards event on the evening of Wednesday 9th March 2016 at a central
London venue.

The Stages of the Competition…
Stage 1 – Shortlisting of Finalists
Entries will be submitted to a panel for initial consideration. Up to four entries will be
selected to go forward to the next stage and invited to submit a 100 second video
for screening at the Awards Event and subsequent uploading to Youtube.
The panel (none of whom will be associated with any of the entries) will include:
 An academic
 A professional working in private practice (usually the recipient of the
previous year’s Practice Project Award).
 A public sector professional (usually the recipient of the previous year’s
Public Sector Award).
 A patron of the UDG.
 An editor of Urban Design.
 The Chair of the UDG Awards Working Group.
Stage 2 – The Awards Event (London, March 2016)
The finalist videos will be screened to the audience and the winner announced at a
prestigious award event in London..
The winner of the award will receive an award certificate and their entry will be
published in Urban Design. The UDG encourages the Developer to invite the whole
team of consultants to the Awards event as they will also be recognised for their
role in the success of the development.
