Nokia 810 application: Maemo Mapper
[#1037] Power saving mode for slow motion
(walking)
Date: 2008-06-06 18:15 Sender: Andrew Daviel On the N810
tablet (internal GPS), it is not the Bluetooth, it is the GPS chip
that consumes most power. The version of mapper I have
(2.4.1) does not turn on the chip when using localhost:gpsd but
does when using Bluetooth to talk to itself - I guess that the
N810 listens for Bluetooth location requests and turns on in
response (and times out if there are no requests for a while).
So, for the N810 at least, this feature (power saving mode
which makes a location request every 10-20 minutes) would
save battery. Even better would be to use gpsd and the Nokia
API to actually turn the chip on and off every few minutes - it
takes about 30 seconds to get a fix if it has a recent position
and almanac, so getting location every 5 minutes would be a
10x saving in GPS chip power (I estimate 10 hours of tablet
battery continually polling the GPS vs 100 hours almost always
idle)
Date: 2007-08-02 16:16 Sender: John Costigan Maemo Mapper
can't generally tell the bluetooth receiver how often to send
updates. It is the receiver's decision. The only other alternative
would be to connect to the receiver, get a single point of data,
then immediately disconnect. Perhaps there is a GPS receiver
that allows you to specify the time resolution of its output?
