• Muhammad did not name a successor
• Muslim Community Abu-Bakr to become to
first caliph
– Caliph: means successor

• Abu-Bakr and the next three caliphs all knew
Muhammad.
– Helps spread Islam
– Used Muhammad’s action as a guide
– Followed the Qur’an
– Kind to conquered people
Internal Conflict Begins
• After the 4th Caliph as murdered a disagreement
over who should succeed split the community
• Ali- Muhammad cousin and son in-law was the
natural choice
• Ali died and the Umayyad family took control
Sunni- Shi’a Split
• Mostly people accepted the
Umayyad’s rule but some
didn’t
– A minority believed that the
caliph should be a relative of
the Prophet –Shi’a
– Those who believed the caliph
should come from the Umma
are called Sunni
Umayyad Dynasty
• Some felt the Umayyad dynasty had become
too focused on Wealth and luxuries
• Religious and political opposition grew
• Eventually taken over by the Abbasid dynasty
Abbasid Dynasty
• Moved the capital to Baghdad
• Strong bureaucracy
• Fall because of the large territory they
controlled
