ISLAMOPHOBIA
Prejudice, hatred
or WHY?
fear of Islam
or Muslims
In 1997, the Runnymede Trust were responsible for a Government document looking
at Islamophobia within a growing Muslim population in Britain
They said that much press coverage of Islam and Muslims
over the years has put across the views that…
1.
Islam is seen as separate and 'other'. It does not have
values in common with other cultures, is not affected by
them and does not influence them
2.
Islam is seen as inferior to the West. It is seen as barbaric,
irrational, primitive and sexist
3.
Islam is seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive
of terrorism and engaged in a 'clash of civilisations'
4.
As a result of this, there is hostility towards Muslims which
is seen as acceptable
Does the media portray a
negative view of Muslims and
Islam?
Searching the tabloids using the keyword
‘Islam’, it is very difficult to find positive
articles about Muslims and Islam
What effect
may this have?
If we only see negative images in the media of a
group, it gives society negative attitudes towards
that group

Islamic teachings unambiguously forbid
suicide
"The Prophet said, '...whoever commits suicide
with a piece of iron will be punished with the
same piece of iron in the Hell Fire," and "A man
was inflicted with wounds and he committed
suicide, and so Allah said: My slave has caused
death on himself hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise
for him.“
Bukhari 2:445
Suicide bombing may be seen as acceptable
by extremists but not by true Muslims.
Suicide is NOT permitted by the Qu’ran
and neither is murder.
Terrorism did not
begin within 9/11
The world has been living with
terrorists for hundreds of years.
Even though actions may differ
from country to country, all
terrorist organisations aim to
attack defenseless civilians,
property or governments to spread
their cause.
