The Rise of Islam
The Prophet Muhammad
He believed that God, Allah, spoke to him through the
angel Gabriel. As a result he came to believe that he
was the last prophet to teach others of Allah
Meccans feared that the traditional Arab Gods would be
neglected and that Mecca would no longer be a center
for pilgrims
He attracted many devoted followers and became a
popular leader, he united Muslims, Arabs and Jews
during the hostilities between Medina and Mecca
He used Mecca as a base from which to work toward
unifying the Arabian peninsula under Islam
Beliefs and Practices of Islam
There is only one God, each person is responsible
for his or her actions
Muslims do not separate their personal and
religious life, Carrying out the five pillars and
other customs ensures that Muslims live their
religion while serving in their communities
The Quran was written in Arabic, the language
spread widely as Muslims expanded into many
lands
Shari’a law required Muslims to extend religious
tolerance to Christians and Jews
