Greater Jihad - Examples
What greater Jihad IS
What greater Jihad IS NOT
• The Arabic word jihad is often translated
• Jihad is not a violent concept
• Jihad is not a declaration of war
as "holy war," but in a purely linguistic
sense, the word jihad means struggling or
striving.
• In a religious sense, Jihad has many
meanings. It can refer to internal as well as
external efforts to be a good Muslims or
believer, as well as working to inform
people about the faith of Islam.
against other religions. It is worth
noting that the Koran specifically
refers to Jews and Christians as
"people of the book" who should be
protected and respected. All three
faiths worship the same God
Lesser Jihad
What lesser Jihad IS
What lesser Jihad ISN’T
•
•
Military action in the name of Islam has not been common
in the history of Islam. Scholars says most calls for violent
jihad are not sanctioned by Islam.
•
The concept of jihad has been hijacked by many political and
religious groups over the ages in a bid to justify various
forms of violence. In most cases, Islamic splinter groups.
•
If military jihad is required to protect the faith against others,
it can be performed using anything from legal, diplomatic
and economic to political means. If there is no peaceful
alternative, Islam also allows the use of force, but there are
strict rules of engagement. Innocents - such as women,
children, or invalids - must never be harmed, and any
peaceful overtures from the enemy must be accepted.
Examples of sanctioned military jihad include the Muslims'
defensive battles against the Crusaders in medieval times.

• THE NEXT PATTERN OF CONFLICT WORL D POLITICS IS entering a new phase, and intellectuals
have not hesitated to proliferate visions of what it will be—the end of history, the return of traditional
rivalries between nation states, and the decline of the nation state from the conflicting pulls of tribalism and
globalism, among others. Each of these visions catches aspects of the emerging reality. Yet they all miss a
crucial, indeed a central, aspect of what global politics is likely to be in the coming years. It is my hypothesis
that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily
economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural.
Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global
politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will
dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future. Conflict
between civilizations will be the latest phase in the evolution of conflict in the modern world. For a century
and a half after the emergence of the modern international system with the Peace of Westphalia, the
conflicts of the Western world were largely among

Religion will always have a place in our world.
Religion isn’t required or necessary in a law
