• 630- Muhammad capture’s Mecca
– Smashed images of gods
– Dedicates Black Stone (temple) to Allah
• Dies 632- Islam controlled most of Mid. East
• 732 Islam stretched from Indus River to
Atlantic Ocean
• Division of Islam today- sects
Teachings of Islam
• Five Pillars
– Must proclaim belief in one God and accept
that god revealed message to Muhammad
– Pray five times a day facing Mecca
– Charity to poor and aged
– Fast during holy month of Ramadan
• 9th month
• Month Gabriel spoke & hejira
• Cannot eat/drink from sunrise-sunset
– Hajj- pilgrimage to Mecca
