Unit #5 – The Islamic and
African Kingdoms

Islamic Trade Routes: The trading routes
that went through Arabia, the land largely
controlled by the Muslims. This trade
connected the Silk Road to the trading
routes of Western Europe.

Mecca: A city located in Western Arabia
that is holy to Muslims. This became a
center of trade along the Islamic routes.

3) Muhammad: Born in Arabia, the man who claimed to
be the final prophet of Allah. He was the founder of
Islam.
4) The House of Wisdom: A combination library, academy,
and translation center. Scholars of different cultures and
beliefs worked to translate and publish the classical
writings of Greece, India, Persia, and Arabia.
5) Calligraphy: The art of beautiful handwriting. This
became important in Muslim writings and artwork.

6) Mosques: Places for the Muslim worship of Allah.
Mosques typically had a courtyard, minaret (a tower),
and a dome. These buildings are very elaborate.
7) The Arabian Nights: Famous Muslim literature
written by Omar Khayyam. His poetry was full of
imagery and told the story of a sultan who marries a
bride each day and executes her the next day until he
meets a bride unlike any other.

9) Mandate of Heaven: In Ancient China, the divine

10) Shintoism: Meaning “the way of the gods,” it is the

well as beauty of nature.
11) Samurai: A Japanese warrior who was sworn to protect
their master or “Lord.”

from 1235 to 1400 and grew rich from trade.
