Fertile Crescent – a region in what is now Iraq, NW Syria,
and part of SE Turkey, shaped like a crescent and having
fertile soil.
Scribe – someone who kept records for society in ancient
Mesopotamian.
Cuneiform – an early wedge-shaped form of writing
developed in Mesopotamia.
Muslim – A believer of Islam.
Fertile – Rich in resources and nutrients.
Hunter-gatherer- a person who finds food by hunting, fishing,
and gathering wild grains, fruits, and nuts.
Judaism – The religion founded by Abraham and his
descendents.






Irrigation – the process of bringing water to dry
land.
Class system – a system in which society is
divided into different social groups.
Jesus – The religion of Christianity is based on
his life and teachings.
Abraham – The founder of Judaism.
Quran – The sacred text of Islam.
Theocracy – a government ruled by a religious
leader.







Muhammad – founder of Islam
Constantinople – The capital of the Ottoman Empire,
now called Istanbul.
Caliph – The title used by rulers of the Muslim
community from 632 until 1924.
Christianity – A religion based on the life and teachings
of Jesus.
Five Pillars of Islam – In Islam, the most important
teachings of Muhammad.
Islam – A religion that teaches that there is one god and
that Muhammad is his prophet.
Ottoman Empire – A vast empire that included what is
now Turkey, and parts of N. Africa, SW Asia, SE Europe.
