What is Star Homework?
•Star homework allows you and your child to
choose how much homework they will do
nightly.
•Your child can choose to do one star or up to
four stars! MPS guidelines state 10 minutes of
homework is appropriate for 1st grade students,
20 minutes for 2nd grade and 30 minutes for 3rd
grade students. Any additional time spent
reading with your child is always encouraged.
•Our class will be attempting to earn enough
stars for a reward on Friday so it is important
your child does nightly homework that helps
our class accomplish their goal (a minimum of
one star is expected each evening.)
Math Practice Page
Your student will be bringing home practice
sheets. These practice sheets are review of
what we learned in class or practice to
master basic facts.
Read for 10 - 15 Minutes
Students must read 10 - 15 minutes to earn a star.
This may be accomplished in a variety of ways
including a family reading time, independent
reading, reading to a siblings, etc. 
It is important that some of this time is spent
reading aloud as oral reading fluency and
comprehension are both important in becoming a
successful reader. Please fill in the blank each day
to indicate however much time they have read.
Letter/Note to the Teacher
Students can write a letter to me about
ANYTHING they wish. It must be four
sentences (even more would be great) and
written in neat handwriting to earn a star.
Word Work
About Our Word Work
Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling
words weekly that have been introduced in class.
Each night of the week your child is expected to do a
different activity to ensure that the words and the
spelling principles they represent are mastered. This
is how the children earn a star for Star Homework.
The attached sheet has various ideas/ways for
students to practice their word work. Please feel free
to try some or come up with your own. It is important
that the students do have your help in order for them
to complete some of the word work activities correctly.
Please help them if needed.
Thank you for your support. Together we can make
valuable progress! 
As always, please contact me ([email protected] or
480 472-2042) if you have any questions.
