TAHARA
Module 1 – Circle 12a
What is Tahara?
Tahara means “cleanliness” or “purity”. It can refer
to physical cleanliness/purity, as well as spiritual
cleanliness/purity. Both types of Tahara are very
important in Islam.
"Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and
He loves those who keep themselves pure and
clean." (2: 22)
Module 1 – Circle 12a
Is cleanliness only required for
acts of Worship?
Abu Malik at-Ash'ari RA reported: The Messenger of
Allah pbuh said: Cleanliness is half of faith and al-Hamdu
Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, and Subhan Allah
(Glory be to Allah) and al-Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah)
fill up what is between the heavens and the earth, and
prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of one's faith) and
endurance is a brightness and the Holy Qur'an is a proof on
your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the
morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves
free or destroying themselves. (Muslim)

Is being tidy part of Islam?
Being tidy and presentable is also of great importance in
Islam. The Prophet Muhammad pbuh advised Muslims to
appear neat and tidy in private and in public. Once when
returning home from battle he advised his army:
“Soon you will meet your brothers, so tidy your saddles and
clothes” (Abu Dawud, “Libas,” 25).

What is Minor Tahara?
Minor Tahara refers to when a person must purify
themselves for ritual acts such as Praying Salah, or
reading Quran. Minor Tahara is carried out by
performing Wudu (ablution).
"Believers! When you prepare for prayer wash your
faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows;
rub your heads (with water) and (wash) your feet
up to the ankles. If you are ritually impure bathe
your whole body." (5: 6)
Module 1 – Circle 12a
When is Wudu necessary?
Wudu is Fard (obligatory) when a Muslim prays Salah, or if
he/she would like to read the Holy Quran. Wudu is
considered by some scholars to be Waajib (necessary)
when performing the Tawaaf around the Ka’bah, and
Mustahabb (recommended) when going to sleep and before
having a bath. Remaining is a constant state of wudu is also
good practice
Module 1 – Circle 12a
What is Istinjah?
Istinjah is the act of cleaning ones private parts after going
to the toilet. Istinjah must be performed after visiting the
toilet to keep oneself clean, and is necessary before wudu
is performed.

What are the Obligatory (Fard) parts of
Wudu?
