reasons ancient civilizations’ desire for expansion
and conquest; explain the importance of the Battle
of Tours for the future of Europe; describe
weaknesses in Arab rule that led to revolts against
Umayyad’s.

THE UMAYYADS: WITH MANY
CONQUESTS, COMES GREAT STRUGGLE
• Umayyad Dynasty was created by a caliph named
Mu’awiyah (MOO-UH-wee-uh) in 661 AD.
• Umayyad conquests were set into motion starting with
North Africa.
• The Umayyads then occupied and conquered most of
Spain in 725 AD.
• The Islamic expansion in Europe came to halt when the
Muslim were defeated at the Battle of Tours
THE BATTLE OF TOURS
• The Leader of the Franks (the French) was Charles
Martel. ---Christians
VS.
• The Leader of the Moors (The Muslim Arab Empire)
was Abd-er Rahman ---Muslims
• The Battle of Tours
ARAB CONQUEST COMES TO A HALT
• The Muslim troops were destroyed by the Byzantine
Empire and the Arab advance into Europe officially
came to an end in 750AD.
• However, after many successful conquests, the
Arab Umayyad Dynasty had created an enormous
Empire.
A SPLIT IN ISLAM
• Many non-Arab Muslims (Persians, Europeans) disliked
the way administrators favored Arab Muslims
• Financial trouble
• The vast Empire was difficult to rule
• Many distant areas began to develop their own
power and became hostile to their Umayyad rules
• Muslims split into two groups:
• Shia: believed only descendants of Ali were true
rulers of Islam
• Sunni: believed that any Muslim could rule
