Angle of Elevation
the angle between the observer’s
line of sight and the horizontal.

Example 1
The angle of elevation from point A to the top of a cliff
is 34o. If point A is 1000 feet from the base of the
cliff, how high is the cliff? (Round to the nearest
tenth)

Example 3
Vernon is on the top deck of a cruise ship and observes
two dolphins following each other directly away from
the ship in a straight line. Vernon’s position is 154
meters above sea level, and the angles of depression
to the two dolphins are 35o and 36o. Find the
distance between the two dolphins.
• Partner A: Draw a picture.
• Partner B: Show what you are trying to find and
explain a strategy.
