Wheel Alignment Set to Specification
•
•
•
•
•
Ensures proper tire wear.
Ensures proper steering response.
Ensures directional stability.
Ensures correct steering wheel position.
Ensures alignment angles are within
manufactures specifications.
What are the “symptoms” of a car that's out of
alignment?
•
•
•
•
•
Excessive or uneven tire wear.
Steering wheel pulls to the left or right.
Feeling of looseness or wandering.
Steering wheel vibration or shimmy.
Steering wheel is not centered when car is moving straight
ahead
Today’s Lesson Objective
Camber Angle & Caster Angle
•
•
•
•
•
Describe what the angles are.
Describe how to interpret readings
Analyze data
Report findings
Make / Adjust for corrections

Looseness
Camber Angle
• Camber: The inward or outward tilt of tire viewed at the top.
• Zero degree camber indicates the tire and wheel assembly are
at true vertical.
• Positive camber indicates the top of the tire is leaning away
from the vehicle.
• Negative camber indicates the top of the tire is leaning
towards the vehicle.
Camber
• Excessive camber angle out of manufactures
specification causes premature tire shoulder
wear
• + outer , - inner
• Vehicle drift or pull
• A side to side camber angle difference greater
than 0.50◦ may cause a pull
Caster
Caster: The forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis
compared to vertical as viewed from the side.
• Zero degree caster indicates the upper and lower pivot points
are vertical to each other.
• Positive caster indicates the upper pivot point is rearward
(behind) of the lower.
• Not considered a major tire wear angle if out of specifications.
Caster
• Negative caster indicates the upper pivot point is forward of the lower
pivot point.
• Positive caster maintains directional stability.
• Side to side difference more than 0.50 degrees may cause a pull or drift.
• Caster pulls toward the more negative side
