Relationships in Geometry
Friday January 31st
Objective for today.
• I understand where we are headed in this
unit.
• I can tell you what we will be covering in this
unit.
• I know the vocabulary for section 1!
3 sections to this unit
Section 1: Area and Polygons
• Essential Question:
• How can you find the area of an irregular
polygon using area formulas.
• There will be four lessons in this section.
– Area of Quadrilaterals
– Area of Triangle
– Solving Area Equations
– Area of Polygons
Section 2
Distance and Area in the Coordinate
Plane
• Essential Question:
• What steps might you take to solve a polygon
problem given the coordinates of its vertices?
• There are two lessons in this section.
– Distance in the coordinate plane
– Polygons in the coordinate plane
Section 3
Surface Area and Volume of Solids
• Essential Question:
• How can a model help you to solve surface
area and volume problems?
• There are 3 Lessons in this section.
– Net and Surface Area
– Volume of a Rectangular Prism
– Solving Volume Equations

Inverse operation (Solving Equations)
Examples:
7k=35 k is multiplied by 7
7k=35 use the inverse operation, division
7 7
k=5
K + 7 = 9 7 is added to k
K + 7 – 7 = 9 – 7 use the inverse operation
K=2

Finding the area of a rectangle:
Formula:
A = length x width
A = lw
If we have a rectangle that is 7 ft tall and 4 ft
wide.
• A = lw A = 7 x 4
• A = 28 ft squared
Try one!
• A rectangle with a base of 9 inches and a
height of 11 inches.
• What is the area?
Vocabulary Review Words Section 1
Polygon: (Poly)
• Many sided figure
Hexagon:
• Has 6 side and 6 angles
Quadrilateral: (Quad)
• Has 4 sides
Triangle: (tri)
• Has 3 sides and 3 angles
More Vocabulary Review
• Square
• Has 4 equal sides and two pair of parallel
sides. Has 4 right angles.
• Rectangle
• Has 4 right angles and two pair of parallel
sides.
New Vocabulary Words Section 1
• Parallelogram:
• A quadrilateral in which opposite sides are
parallel and congruent.
• Trapezoid
• A quadrilateral in which two sides are parallel.
• Rhombus
• A quadrilateral in all which side are congruent
and opposite sides are parallel.
