Buddhism adopted mainly during period of disunion, what are
the teachings of Buddhism/why would that affect people to

Tang’s helped construct many Buddhist temples/sent Buddhist
missionaries across Asia. So popular/important 400-450 known
as Age of Buddhism.

Song Dynasty
• Led Chinese to most advanced civilization in the world,
advanced the civil service system even more to make
sure most advanced ran the gov’t, tests = Confucianism
ideas
• Scholar-officials – those who passed difficult civil service
exams became these elite members of gov’t. Became a
pathway for ordinary people to gain wealth/status
• Song could not get back north/west lands Tang had lost,
tried to buy peace with Nomads, does it work?
• Writers/art reached height, porcelain, type of ceramic,
produced at this time, colors of white, black, green

Achievements/Inventions
• During Tang/Song led the world in achievements with invention
of gunpowder. Initially used for fireworks. As it spread world
used for weaponry.
• Perfected Magnetic compass, revolutionized sea travel as it
uses earth’s magnetic field to show direction. Sailors could
accurately determine direction and navigate more
easily/dramatic increase in world exploration.
• Woodblock printing, invented paper/ink much earlier than
others, page of text carved into wood quick multi printing.
Movable Type – blocks w/ letters carved can be rearranged
and reused to print many things, faster than woodblock but
Chinese did not use due to many characters. Europe would
revolutionize printing with this type
• Paper money first used by Song dynasty, convenient, light/easy
to use
Prosperity/Society
• New rice could be grown 3 times a year, cotton/tea
produced largely. Tea became highly popular among
Chinese, more food = more people, Song dynasty 100
million people
• Traded with Asia, India, japan, Korea
• Largest cities in world, restaurants, shops, teahouses,
entertainment districts. Several cities with 1 million people
• Desire for small dainty feet, custom of foot binding,
women's feet wrapped at young age, was
painful/deformed feet over time, difficulty walking. Became
symbol of husband’s authority over wife.
• New upper social class will emerge called the
gentry – social class of scholar-officials and their
families, very large.
• Attained position in the gentry through education
and social service
• Below them was the urban middle class
(merchants, shopkeepers, skilled artisans
• At bottom was laborers. Largest class by far.
