2. Israelite- an early name for the Jewish people.
3. Covenant- an agreement or promise
4. Ten Commandments- ten laws and teachings said
to be given to Moses by God
5. Exodus- The escape of the Israelites from slavery
in Egypt to freedom.

Abraham is often called the “father of the Jews.”
According to the Torah, it was Abraham who
introduced the belief in one single God to the
Israelites. This was a new idea in the ancient
world. At that time, most people worshiped
many gods and goddesses.
Moses- The Torah tells how God gave Moses Ten
Commandments engraved on two stone tablets.
These teachings became the foundation of
Judaism.
The Torah tells how Moses led the Israelites out
of slavery in Egypt (Exodus).

• Eightfold path- A key idea that Buddhist
followers should live their lives according to
eight teachings.

emphasizes proper behavior.
4. The teachings of Confucius had a major influence
on Chinese culture. Values such as respect for
elders, proper behavior, and love of scholarship
became deeply woven into Chinese society.
