Settling in the Sri-Lanka:
● Sinhalese absorbed the islands native inhabitants and created an advanced
civilization.
● The Sinhalese adopted Buddhism and built sophisticated irrigation systems
that allowed them to farm on land that was dry.
● The tamils which was the groups of indians also began to arrive in Sri-Lanka.
● Tamils brought a different culture and language to Sri-Lanka.
Muslim state in Maldives:
● Maldives were settled by Buddhism and Hinduism from Sri-Lanka and india
some time around the sixth century.
● By the twelfth century, the population had converted to islam.

In 1968, the Maldives declared itself as a republic, headed by the Sultan
● Maldives containing only about 300,000 people is one of the worlds most
smallest independent countries.
Ethnic mosaic of the islands:
● Sri-Lanka is a diverse mix of ethnic and religious groups.
● Sinhalese Buddhism makes up about nearly 75 percent of the population
while Tamil hinduism makeup about 18 percent.
● There is also a small portion of christians of mixed Europeans decent known
as Burghers.
● The population of the Maldives is also multi-ethnic, people are mixed with
arab, southeast asian, and chinese.
Cultural life in Sri-Lanka:
● Religion is a key role In culture in Sri-Lanka
● Buddhist and hindu temples, muslim mosques, and christian churches dot the
landscape.
● Art and language are strongly influenced by those religious traditions.
● Kandyan dancing, is the national dance in sri-lanka, these dances tell stories
of local kings and heroes and are performed at Buddhist festivals.
Economic Strength:
● Sri-Lanka economy is based on agriculture, also has large areas devoted to
plantation agriculture.
● These plantation farms produce crops such as tea, rubber, and coconuts for
exports.
● Sri-Lanka is still one of the worlds leading tea-producing countries.
● The maldives, farming is limited by the lack of land, stills provide one-fourth
of the jobs and a large share of the country’s export earnings.
Tough challenges:
● In Sri-Lanka tourism was growing then civil wars started to begin and the
tourist industry collapsed.
● Warfare also disrupted other economic activities crashing the infrastructure
of Sri-Lanka its roads, bridges, and power systems.
● The maldives are at peace but still faces global warming, the melting icecaps
are causing floods.
● The maldives lie on lower land, by the end of the 21st century that the island
will be completely flooded.

Sinhalese:
Indo-Aryans that moved to the Sri-Lanka in the sixth century settling in
the south and created an advanced civilization and adopted Buddhism.
Tamils:
A dravidian Hindu, that arrived to the Sri-Lanka in the fourth century,
settling in north.
sultan:
A ruler of a Muslim country.
