Languages
• Hindustani is the most
widespread language of India.
The Indian census takes the
widest possible definition of
"Hindi" as the broad variety of
the Hindi languages. The native
speakers of Hindi so defined
account for 39% of Indians.
• English is also widely spoken due
to the fact that this region was
once a colony for Great Britain.
South Asia as Colonies
Belief Systems: Hinduism
• Religion in India is characterized by
a diversity of religious beliefs and
practices. India is the birthplace of
three of the world's major
religions; namely Hinduism,
Buddhism, and Sikhism.
• Hinduism, the world’s oldest
religion, has no beginning--it
precedes recorded history. It has
no human founder. It is a mystical
religion, leading the devotee to
personally experience the Truth
within, finally reaching the
pinnacle of consciousness where
man and God are one.
Festivals: Diwali (Hinduism)
• Diwali (or Deepavali, the "festival of
lights") is an ancient Hindu festival
celebrated in autumn (northern
hemisphere) or spring (southern
hemisphere) every year.
• The festival spiritually signifies the victory
of light over darkness or good over evil,
knowledge over ignorance, and hope over
despair. Its celebration includes millions
of lights shining on housetops, outside
doors and windows, around temples and
other buildings in the communities and
countries where it is observed. The
festival preparations and rituals typically
extend over a five-day period, but the
main festival night of Diwali coincides
with the darkest, new moon night of the
Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. In the
Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls
between mid-October and midNovember.
Rangoli
• Rangoli is an art form from India in
which patterns are created on the
floor in living rooms or courtyards
using materials such as colored
rice, dry flour, colored sand or
flower petals. It is usually made
during Diwali (Deepawali), Onam,
Pongal and other Indian festivals.
Designs are passed from one
generation to the next, keeping
both the art form and the tradition
alive.
• The purpose of rangoli is
decoration, and it is thought to
bring good luck. Design depictions
may also vary as they reflect
traditions, folklore and practices
that are unique to each area.
Belief Systems: Buddhism
• Buddhism is a religion to about 300
million people around the world. The
word comes from 'budhi', 'to awaken'.
It has its origins about 2,500 years ago
when Siddhartha Gotama, known as
the Buddha, was himself awakened
(enlightened) at the age of 35.
• To many, Buddhism goes beyond
religion and is more of a philosophy or
'way of life'. It is a philosophy because
philosophy 'means love of wisdom'
and the Buddhist path can be
summed up as:
(1) to lead a moral life,
(2) to be mindful and aware of
thoughts and actions, and
(3) to develop wisdom and
understanding.
Festivals: Songkran (Buddhism)
• The festive occasion is in keeping with the
Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar.
• The traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April.
• The morning begins with merit-making. Visiting
local temples and offering food to the Buddhist
monks are commonly practiced; however, on this
specific occasion, performing water pouring on
Buddha statues is considered an iconic ritual for
this holiday – it represents purification and the
washing away all of their sins and bad luck. As a
festival of unity, people who have moved away
usually return homes to their loved ones and elder
family members. As a way to show respect,
younger people often practice water pouring over
the palms of elders’ hands. On the same occasion,
paying reverence to ancestors is also an important
part of Songkran tradition.
• The holiday is known for its iconic water festival
which is mostly celebrated by young people. Major
streets are closed for traffic, and are used as
arenas for water fights. Celebrants, young or old,
participate in this tradition by splashing water on
each other.
Belief Systems: Sikhism
• Sikh religion focuses on the oneness
of God and the need for people to be
devoted to God and to develop God
consciousness. In many ways, the Sikh
religion offers a simple monotheistic
message of devotion, ethical living,
and service to others.
• The goal in Sikh religion is to become
gurmukh or a regenerate person someone who is God-centered and
God-filled. Such a person is liberated
from the cycle of life, death and
rebirth. Instead of being plagued by
the 5 evils, this person's life
demonstrates the 5 virtues of: truth,
contentment, compassion, patience,
and dharma (humble service to God
and others).
Festivals: Vaisakhi (Sikhism)
• Refers to the harvest festival of the
Punjab region, the Punjabi new
year falling on the same day, Khalsa
Sirjana Divas and Mesha Sankranti
festival. It is celebrated on 13 April.
It marks the birth of the Khalsa in
the year 1699.
• Vaisakhi is one of the three
festivals chosen by Guru Amar Das
to be celebrated by Sikhs (the
others being Maghi and Diwali.
• To mark the celebrations, Sikh
devotees generally attend the
Gurdwara before dawn with
flowers and offerings in hands.
Processions through towns are also
common.
Henna
• The name henna also refers to the dye
prepared from the plant and the art of
temporary body art (staining) based on
those dyes. Henna has been used since
antiquity to dye skin, hair and fingernails,
as well as fabrics including silk, wool and
leather.
• Bridal henna nights remain an important
custom in India, particularly among
traditional families.
• The earliest text mentioning henna in the
context of marriage and fertility
celebrations comes from the Ugaritic
legend of Baal and Anath, which has
references to women marking themselves
with henna in preparation to meet their
husbands, and Anath adorning herself
with henna to celebrate a victory over the
enemies of Baal.
Economic Characteristics
• As of 2015, India is no longer considered
by the IMF (International Monetary Fund)
as a developing country but as a newly
industrialized country – just one step
below being considered a developed
country.
• The most popular job sector in India is
still IT, although job numbers have
dwindled, owing to the global financial
crisis.
• Retail is one of India's biggest emerging
job markets, with an estimated 2 million
positions filled in 2010.
• With India modernizing in line with the
western world, jobs in technological
research are hot for would-be workers.
The countries showing in blue are
considered Newly-Industrialized
countries
Job Outsourcing
• Job outsourcing can be defined as the
contractual transfer of the management and
operation of some business processes of one
organization to another organization. To make
it simpler, it means the sourcing out of the
easily codified works like help desk assistance,
system maintenance, programming etc. to
countries that are capable of managing it
cheaply.
• With the advancement of time, Republic of
India has emerged as the major hub of job
outsourcing in the world.
• The lion's share of job outsourcing to India is
done by the United States. Other places
contributing to the outsourcing industry in
India are United Kingdoms, Australia and
Dubai.
• Computer programming and call center jobs
are mainly the two kinds of jobs outsourced
to the country of India.
• Jobs outsourcing helps U.S. companies be
more competitive in the global marketplace.
They can sell to foreign markets by having
overseas branches. They keep labor costs low
by hiring in emerging markets with lower
standards of living. That allows lower prices
on the goods they ship back to the United
States.
• Outsourcing also increases U.S.
unemployment. The 14 million outsourced
jobs are nearly double the 7.9 million
unemployed in the United States. If all those
jobs returned, it would be enough to also hire
the 8 million who are working part-time but
would full-time positions.
• Would American workers be willing to accept
the low wages paid to foreign employees? If
not, then American consumers would be
forced to pay higher prices.
Bollywood
• Bollywood is basically the informal
name for the Hindi Film Industry
based in Mumbai, which is one of
the largest centers of film
production in the world.
• It all started way back in 1913 with
the first silent feature film. Over
the next twenty years the Indian
film industry grew so quickly that
by the 1930s, the country was
producing over 200 films a year.
• In terms of numbers of films
produced, Bollywood is the biggest
film industry in the world with over
1000 films every year
