‘You should realize from this that polished rice
is not polished rice; it is life itself.’
The Gift of Rice, Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, p.1126

Background
In feudalistic Japan, man cannot sustain life
without rice. Thus, rice is the treasure that
sustain life. It is equivalent to money in
present day society.

Background
When an earnest disciple contribute a sack of
polished rice to Nichiren Daishonin, a
practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, this act is like
contributing to our own life.

In Buddhist view, it’s not just a sack of
polished rice or something to be value in
material terms, but it’s through the effort of the
disciple in saving his income to support
Nichiren Daishonin in his propagation effort.

Thus, Nichiren Daishonin gave the assurance
to this disciple that sincere contribution will
enable one to attain enlightenment. It is a
great beneficial cause for enlightenment

Sincere contribution in kosen-rufu equals to
contributing our own life.

That’s why contribution is not about sacrificing
oneself, but it is contributing a gift to our own
life, that’s our ‘true-self’.

Understanding the greatness of the
philosophy of Buddhism and the
Gakkai’s principles and activity, I
understand the importance of
contribution. A great philosophy
requires a lot of manpower and also
financial support to propagate.
Whether my contribution is a large or
small amount, I made all out effort to
participate in each and every gokuyo.
This is my belief. YMD

I have been making contributions to
Gokuyo for many years. I have a
profound feeling that my career, my
health and my financial stability are
slowly changing for the better and
becoming more secured. I am very
grateful to the Gohonzon and the
organisation. WD

Through my years of activity in the
organisation, I realised that my
greatest benefit is my changed
philosophy of life. From this, I also
understood the meaning of gratitude.
I encourage my family members to
participate in the gokuyo, particularly
the Future Division because I hope
they can understand the purpose of
life, that when you light up the lamp
for others, it will light up your path
(Gosho excerpt). MD

Career - I now have a secured job. This job
encouraged me to have a stronger seeking spirit in
studying Buddhism and also improving myself.
Financial – my income is stable and has been
increasing gradually. I also received unexpected
allowance, leaving behind the financial problems in
the past. YWD

I have always followed my mother to
Gokuyo. At times, my mother will give
me money. At other times, I use the
money I saved up or from my angpau
money. My mother said that contribution
is a form of repaying our gratitude and
also sharing the expenses of the
organisation. Under the protection of
the gohonzon, I fall sick very rarely and
becoming better in my studies. I also
made many friends. Junior Division
