VOLCANOES and EARTHQUAKES
By Patrick Taylor
Ms. Armstrong's
3rd period class
Mandatory questions
●
1. Earthquakes happen when the
energy of 2 tectonic plates is
released. The energy then causes
vibrations that cause earthquakes.
Earthquakes form on fault lines. I
found this on
http://www.eduplace.com/kids/sla/6
/volcanoes.html. Volcanoes form
when hot magma from the mantle
rises to the surface, then as the hot
lava cools and the ash builds up
the volcano grows. Volcanoes also
form on fault lines. I found this on
http://weatherization/weathervolcano.htm.
●
2. The ring of fire is located in the
pacific ocean. I found this on page
83 of the textbook. It is called the
ring of fire because, it is made of
active volcanoes that are in the
shape of a ring. I found this on
page 83 of the textbook.
●
3. Earthquakes are measured with
different kinds of scales are used the
most famous is the Richter scale. I
found this on page 54 in the textbook.
we measure earthquakes because, it
helps us keep record of the strongest
earthquakes and helps certain areas
stay pepared for earthquakes. I found
this on pages 68-72 in the textbook.
Chosen questions
3A. An area with lots of earthquakes is Alaska It has the
most earthquakes of all states, it has three of the worlds
top ten earthquakes. It has the second highest
earthquake a 9.2 on the Richter scale. It has 24,ooo
earthquakes a year. Every 13 years on average Alaska
has a 8.0 magnitude earthquake or higher. I found this
on http://www.alaskakids.org/index.cfm/knowalaska/Alaska-Geography/Earthquakes. The things that
Alaska has done for safety is they made all of their new
buildings bolted to concrete supports, and are tring to
make everything bolted down. They have also tought
almost every Alaskan how to hide under a desk or table.
I found this on

e.pdf.
●
4B. Earthquakes
are measured
because, it allows
us to be prepared
for some
earthquakes in
areas where there
has been previous
history of
earthquakes. I
found this on
page 68-72 in the
textbook.
Student made questions
1. Earthquakes happen very
often. There is always an
earthquake happening at
all times of day, but most
are to weak to be felt. i
found this on
http://www.earthquakescan
ada.nrcan.gc.ca/infogen/magfreq-eng.php.
●
2. The average amount of
volcanic eruptions per month is,
50-60 eruptions a month on
average. I found this on
http://www.scholastic.com/teach
ers/article/volcanic-eruptions.
●
3. The advantages of living near a
volcano are the volcano produces
geothermal power, all of the ass may
be harmful at first but then makes
fertile soil and, living near one allows
you to study it easier. I found this on

noes/advantages.php.
