Objectives of PIER-ICDP
The ICDP Eger Rift project aims to develop the most modern, comprehensive
observatory worldwide for the study of earthquake swarms and CO2 degassing
in order to reach a new level of high frequency, near-source, and multiparameter observation of earthquake swarms and related phenomena
What are the physical and chemical processes leading to earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions?
How does fluid transfer through the crust work?
How influence geological processes the deep biosphere and the
evolution of early life in deep subsurface environments?
Interdisciplinary research: Structural geology, geophysics, fluid geochemistry,
paleo-volcanology, geomicrobiology related to deep biosphere research
Drilling the Eger Rift: previous steps and future plans
Spicak, Förster, Horsfield (2005)
Possible design of the observatory at
depth by three to four 3D high arrays
