Volcanoes
Mrs. Hoenshell
Objective: “I can define and give examples of
different volcanoes and how they are formed.
Essential Question:
What causes volcanoes?
How are volcanoes related to plate boundaries and
does a certain type of plate boundary have a different
kind of volcano? If so, what is the difference?
•What is a
volcano?
•What is a
volcano?
A volcano is a weak spot
on the Earth where
magma comes out
through the top of the
volcano.
Why do
volcanoes
form?
Volcanoes form because
magma rises through
openings called vents
caused by pressure that
builds up within the earth.
Most volcanoes form where
two plates meet.
Why do
volcanoes
erupt?
Hot, melted rock magma deep
within the earth becomes
lighter as it heats up.
Because it is lighter than
solid rock it rises until it
pushes to the surface of the
earth. A volcanic eruption
occurs!
Where do
volcanoes
erupt?
In the middle of the
earth’s plates,
hotspots, near the
edges of the earth’s
plates and subduction
and rift zones.
What is a
hotspot?
A hotspot is when
volcanoes form in the
middle of a tectonic plate.
What are
the 3 main
shapes of
volcanoes?
How are Shield volcanoes form when

broad, gentle slope.

Shield cones are low,
volcanoes?
very broad, and gently
sloping volcanoes.
What is
the history
of shield
volcanoes?
Shield cones were
named by Icelandic
people because the
cone's shape reminded
them of a warriors shield
laid down.

At what type
of plate
boundary
would you
find shield

pyroclastics.

What are
the main
characteris
tics of
composite
volcanoes?
Composite
volcanoes are
explosive. They
usually pyroclastic
flows that are very
destructive.

At which
plate
boundary
would you
expect to see
a composite
volcano?
Most composite
volcanoes are found
around the Ring of
Fire along the
subduction zones for
convergent plates.
Where are

composite
volcanoes
located?
Mt. Vesuvius,
Mt. Fujiyama,
and Mt. St.

What is
the name
for a dead
volcano?
Give an
example
A dead volcano is a volcano
that has not erupted in
recorded history and shows no
signs of ever erupting.
Mt Hood in Oregon is an
example of an extinct volcano
What is
the name
for when
a sleeping
volcano?
A sleeping volcano is
dormant.
It is when a volcano
has not erupted
recently but has
erupted in recorded
history.
What is the
name for a
volcano
that has
recently
erupted?
A volcano that has
recently erupted is
active. Mauna Loa is
an active volcano.
