DO NOW:
Which “sphere” is the most
important and why?
Do Now: 9/10/2013
1.What are the five systems (“Spheres”) of Earth? Describe each and provide an
example.
A. Biosphere- all living organisms on earth
B. Geosphere- Earth’s surface to its center
C. Atmosphere- the gases that surround the earth.
D. Hydrosphere- all water on earth, including; in oceans, atmosphere and
freshwater (above and underground)
E. Anthrosphere- all human being on earth
2. Why do you believe humans have their own “sphere”?
9/23 Do Now: Write the following in Scientific Notation:
1. 1,325,000 = 1.33 x 106
2. 0.0005684= 5.68 x 10-4
3. 10,859.69= 1.09 x 104

Do Now:
Does the density of water change when it is frozen?
YES- becomes LESS dense because the atoms are more spread-out
1. Why does warm air rise? Explain in terms of density.
Because the atoms are moving quickly and more spread-out
2. What is the difference between circumference and diameter? How can they be measured in
our classroom?
Circumference- distance around a sphere (wrap with string and measure)
Diameter- distance across (place ruler across the widest part/center)
3. Density and Geology:(#3)- Which crust is older and why?
Continental, because the
oceanic is more dense and
always going under and
melting in the mantle while
the continental is always
continually floating.
Do Now:
1. Why is a hypothesis and what THREE words should be written in your hypothesis?
A prediction based on background information or observations
2. What is the difference between independent and dependent variables?
Independent is the change YOU make
Dependent is the effect or result of that change
3. What are the steps to the Scientific Method?
1) Question or Problem
2) Research/Background info
3) Hypothesis
4) Experiment/Procedure
5) Results
6) Analysis/Conclusion
7) Sources of error/future studies
4. What are the formulas and units for density and volume?
Density in Mass divided by Volume (Cm3 or ML)
Volume is length x height x width (cm3)
1. What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of atoms in an object while weight is the force of gravity on an object
2. What are units for mass?
grams
3. If I am 3000kg on Earth and the moon has 1/6 the gravity of Earth,
what is my mass on the moon?
Mass= 3000kg still- matter does not change
4. If I weigh 120lbs on Earth, what would I weigh on the moon?
Weight on moon= 20lbs
1. How does density control the motion of a submarine?
To dive, water is taken into tanks, increasing density so its weight
is greater than the buoyant force. The tanks are filled until the
density isinequal
DO Now: Answer
your to the water to allow it to float level. Water is

Chart to cause the sub to rise at an angle to the surface.
2. Why does a helium balloon float?
Helium is less dense than air, which is 78% N and 21% O
3. Jupiter has a diameter that is larger than ten Earth’s, how is it
possible for earth to be more dense than the planet Jupiter?
Jupiter is made of gas, Earth is made of dense rock and metal
4. Explain, in terms of density, why did the Titanic sink?
Before the hole, Titanic was a steel balloon full of air After the
hole was formed, water replaced the air on the ship causing the
density to increase and the ship to sink.
Do Now- Copy questions into your notes and leave
space for the answers and discussions.
1. What is density, mass and volume?
1.
2.
3.
Density-how heavy or light something is (mass divided by volume)
Mass- how much matter there is in a object (units = grams)
Volume- how much space an object takes up (units are cm3 or mL)
2. If a cube with a density of 10g/cm3 is broken into two equal pieces,
what is the density of each piece? 10g/cm3- see board for example
3. Use your understanding of density to explain why the Titanic sank.
The water replaced the air in the ship. Water is more dense than air,
therefore, the density of the ship plus the water over-came the density of the
saltwater and the ship sank.
4. Does a space shuttle taking off from Earth need more or less fuel
than the same space shuttle taking off from the moon?
LESS- the moon has less gravity (1/6) and has no atmosphere (friction) so it is
easier to take off from the moon.
