What is a volcano?
A volcano is an opening,
or hole, in the earths
surface or crust, which
allows hot, molten rock,
ash, and gases to escape
from below the surface.
1. Large magma chamber
2. Bedrock
3. Conduit (pipe)
4. Base
5. Sill
6. Dike
7. Layers of ash emitted by the
volcano
8. Flank
9. Layers of lava emitted by the
volcano
10. Throat
11. Parasitic cone
12. Lava flow
13. Vent
14. Crater
15. Ash cloud
Glossary
What causes a Volcanic
Eruption?
All the Lava, Magma and gases build up to a
point where there is no more room. So the
Lava, Magma and gases try to find holes in the
ground but when they find one they all rush to
get there first and the Lava, Magma gets
pushed up by all the gases and they make a
Volcanic eruption. Glossary
What to do before a volcanic
eruption:
1. Find out if you live in a volcanic area and the hazards
that could affect you .
2. If you live in an area that could experience a lava flow,
make sure you know a quick route to safe ground .
3. Talk to your local Civil Defence Emergency
Management Group about how they will warn you of a
volcanic eruption .
4. Develop a Household Emergency Plan and prepare an
Emergency Survival Kit so that you will cope with being
on your own for three days or more.
5. You should also plan what you need in your Getaway
Kit in case you need to evacuate.
Before a Volcanic
Eruption
1. The Volcano starts to smoke.
2. The ground starts to shake.
3. Lava pours out.

Effects of a Volcanic eruption
Effect of Volcanoes on people and the
environment
Volcanoes can have a very serious effect on
the lands and people around them when they
erupt.
•Buildings are destroyed and people are made
homeless.
•People are killed.
•Clouds of ash cover plants making them
inedible.
•Poisonous gases kill people and animals.
•Dust causes pneumonia and illnesses to the
survivors.
•Dark skies, severe winds and heavy rains
may follow an eruption for months
afterwards.

What you need to have in your get
away kit:
1. In some emergencies, such as a flood or volcanic eruption, you
will need to evacuate and take your Getaway Kit with you. Don't
forget, you will also need to consider how you will care for your
pets during an evacuation. Everyone in the house should have
a Getaway Kit. This kit should include:
2. Essential items from your Emergency Survival Kit.
3. Family documents.
4. Birth and marriage certificates .
5. Drivers licenses and passports .
6. Financial information (insurance policies, mortgage
information, etc).
7. Family photos.
8. Personal items .
9. Towels, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper.
10. Hearing aids, glasses, mobility aids for elderly or vulnerable
members of your house.
Volcano facts
How many volcanoes are there
in the world?
1.
There are around 1510 'active' volcanoes in the world. We
currently know of 80 or more which are under the oceans.
What causes volcanoes to erupt?
1.
The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit
together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes move.
2.
Between the Earth's crust and the mantle is a substance called
magna which is made of rock and gases.
3.
When two plates collide, one section slides on top of the other, the
one beneath is pushed down. Magma is squeezed up between
two plates.

Did you know?
• The name "volcano" comes from the name of
Vulcan, a god of fire in Roman mythology.
• Volcanoes are like giant safety valves that
release the pressure that builds up inside the
Earth.
• The largest volcano (and mountain) in our Solar
System is Olympus Mons on the planet Mars.
The volcano is 17 miles (27 km) tall and over
320 miles (520 km) across.
